Talent Is Overrated

Yesterday the Baltimore Ravens (arguably somewhat less talented than the San Francisco 49ers) won the Super Bowl.  They did so because they performed better, they executed better. On paper the 49ers stacked up better….at least that’s what the oddsmakers thought.

And then the game was played.  Talent is overrated!

  1. Team leadership also counts. Was struck by contrasting demeanor of brother coaches: SF always angry or hysterical, Baltimore centered and determined. Could have nothing to do with it but inspiration beats fear over the long term.

Yes, Sally, the brother’s demeanor is definitely different from one another. This is one factor amongst many that may be differentiators. Bottom line: in a game of that magnitude you cannot make the mistakes (largely self-imposed) the 49ers made and expect to win. At that level every mistake is magnified 3X.. Talent only takes you so far. It’s true for football; true for business as well.

  2. I agree. So many factors contribute to success.
While standing in line at Trader Joe’s this week, a greeting card with an ocean scene caught my eye. It read,”The power of the waves is their persistence,”

  3. This response is better phrased; a greeting card cannot stand in line. While standing in line at Trader Joe’s this week, I noticed a greeting card picturing lapping ocean waves. The card read, “The power of the waves is their persistence.”
