An Executive Team Desiring To ‘up Their Game’

There are lots of reasons why executive teams fail to realize their full potential. Former Wells Fargo CEO Richard Kovacevich, in speaking of his experiences on the basketball court, put it well, “It’s the best five players that win the game, not the five best players.” Rest assured that those best five players trust each other and have made an emotional commitment to an over-arching goal.

Almost without exception, under-performing executive teams have issues with trust. In some instances the gaps in trust prove to be a big deal; other instances less so. Regardless, trust deficits are not only a drag on performance but are personally exacerbating. Using the mind-sets to measure against quickly reveals where the gaps are.

One of the best ways for executive teams to ‘up their game’ is to personally commit to being a better professional and to adopt professional ideals as the team’s standard of conduct. This naturally improves trust—enabling the ‘five best players’ to become the ‘best five players’.
